Meet the Team - Mike Denby
I'm the Business Communication Manager at The Source. I'm responsible for three departments in total. The first department I manage is the Conference Department. I manage a small team of very organised and efficient individuals whose main aim is to ensure every conference, event or meeting goes to plan.
The second department I manage is the Hospitality Department. I began managing this department in January 2008. The team is responsible for ensuring the catering in both the cafeteria and the meeting rooms is produced to a high standard. The hospitality team do a great job and work really hard, and during busy periods even get me to work on the pot wash!
The final department I manage is the Business Communication team. It's the team's responsibility to ensure The Source is communicated both locally and nationally to potential customers. The role involves a large amount of networking and personal selling and is very challenging and pressured, but I'm very fortunate to work with a hugely supportive and professional team.
How long have you worked at The Source?
I've worked at The Source for almost five and a half years. I was a fresh faced University Graduate when I joined The Source. Thinking back to my first day I was really impressed with the facilities and wanted to be a part of its success. I've been fortunate to have worked under two very supportive managers who have helped me develop. A few grey hairs later and I'm proud to say that I did play a part in The Source's success.
A little birdie tells me you are a bit if a quiz master, is this true?
I wouldn't say quiz master, more along the lines of master of luck. During 2007 and 2008 I decided to appear in my own game show marathon. I appeared on five TV game shows in just over 12 months and was very fortunate to win four out of five TV shows. I would love to say that I used my intelligence and educational background to win but I'd be telling an untruth. Each time I appeared on a show and won it was due to the fact that ‘lady luck' was sitting beside me and steering me in the right direction. I love that woman!
What would be your dream gameshow to appear on?
My dream game show would have to be Bullseye. I actually auditioned for a remake of the show with a friend of mine. The research team said they would love to use us because we would make good TV, but they also said "Neither of you can play darts, so why are you here?". They did however recommend us to another show they were producing which didn't involve darts (lady luck appears again). We appeared on this show and were both nervous wrecks. It was our first show and we somehow managed to win. The adrenalin rush and fun gained was the reason why I appeared on four more shows. I've never appeared on a reality TV show but would consider appearing on the Apprentice or Big Brother!
And the million dollar question for May... What is your lifetime ambition?
I'd love to be self employed and be a property developer one day. By the end of the year I'd like to invest in a second property to develop and either rent or resell. I renovated my first property about three years ago. It was really hard work but rewarding when you could see the end result, and of course the profit.
