Sheffield Dresses Up to Showcase Creative Talent
Sheffield Showcase is an outdoor gallery which aims to boost footfall for businesses still operating in the area around the Sevenstone development site. The project will provide opportunities for future Sheffield retail talent who will drive the success of the New Retail Quarter in years to come.
The window displays will also present up and coming Sheffield retail students from The Source with the chance to develop their skills within a genuine retail environment. The students began their journey by supporting artists and designers with window displays, learning firsthand how to use visual merchandising to appeal to the public eye. With the windows changing every month, the students will work with various local talent to create ‘film set' window displays and in turn developing their knowledge and skills in visual merchandising.
Ann Cadman, Managing Director of the Source said: "This is an exciting and unique opportunity for our Visual Merchandising students. Sheffield Showcase will put them on a platform to show off their skills and really push them forward as Sheffield's next generation of retail talent. This isn't a one off project but one that will continue throughout the coming months, constantly changing to bring fresh visuals and develop skills."
The project is funded by Sheffield City Council and co-ordinated by the council in partnership with Creative Sheffield and The Source. The dynamic initiative will offer a platform for local businesses and creative individuals to contribute to the improvement of the city by showcasing their wares within the window spaces.
Council Leader Paul Scriven, who unveiled a showcase of Sheffield talent on Tuesday 14th July as part of the City's Vacant Shops Strategy, said: "This isn't just window dressing - far from it. We want to showcase the best up and coming talent Sheffield has to offer and why not use the space available in an exciting and eye-catching way. We needed something exciting to drive up and maintain footfall around the Sevenstone development site and what better way of bringing the space to life.
The Source will curate each window space through their visual merchandising scheme alongside key Sheffield artists, designers and retailers. By combining new talent with existing retail expertise, we hope to boost interest in the city centre, and hopefully providing a benchmark for other towns and cities to follow. I hope people will be pleased with what Sheffield has to Showcase, all will be revealed next week. Come down and take a look."
