Stephanie’s success at Rotherham Ambassador Awards
Stephanie’s success at Rotherham Ambassador Awards
14th July 2009

Stephanie Battersby, a learner from The Source, was appointed a Rotherham Ambassador at the prestigious awards on 2nd July 2009.

The Rotherham Ambassador Awards are dedicated to people from Rotherham who have overcome barriers to gain employment after a significant period of unemployment. Examples of barriers to employment include childcare, health related issues, benefit related issues, or lack of educational qualifications.

Stephanie was made redundant in 2008 from a local factory where she had worked for 24 years. She came to The Source for support after being referred by her Employment Advisor and felt a change in career may pose a great opportunity for her. Stephanie decided retail was a career she wished to enter and enrolled onto the Skills for Jobs training course at The Source. The course offers an opportunity for individuals to develop skills required to fulfil a career in the retail sector. Tutors dedicate themselves to build upon people's confidence and team working skills, and support learners into a guaranteed interview within the retail sector.  The Source even prepared Stephanie with interview techniques to make her feel more confident in a situation that she was unfamiliar with.

After only four weeks on the course, the opportunity arose for Stephanie to undertake an interview with B&M Homestores in Sheffield. Stephanie attended the interview with an updated CV and a new found confidence and was offered a position.

Stephanie now feels her confidence and self esteem have received a boost as a result of both attending the course and from entering employment .She is thoroughly enjoying her new role within the retail sector which is what she wished for.

Stephanie said: "The event was fantastic and it was great to meet other people like me who had been through similar situations. I am very proud of what I have achieved from the training at The Source and I will wear my Rotherham Ambassador badge with pride."

The Ambassador Awards are an opportunity to recognise the achievements of people across Rotherham who have triumphed under great pressure and difficulties.  Stephanie is a great example of this and The Source is extremely proud of her achievements.

Stephanie's Tutor, Anna Harman from The Source, said: "Stephanie is a great role model, especially in the current climate; she is showing people who have been made redundant from long term employment that they can make a difference to their lives; they too can increase their confidence and self esteem and the opportunities to retrain are endless.  We are very proud of Stephanie's achievements and hope Stephanie's story can have a positive impact on somebody else's life."
