This month saw students from Wickersley School and Sports College combine culinary abilities with selling skills. The students held a very impressive cake sale, with all proceeds going to charity.
The event, held at the Source was organised and publicised by year 10 students participating on the BTEC First Diploma in Retail course. The baked goodies were a combination of purchased cakes and homemade delights.
The event was a great success, with a final total of £130 being raised for the Sheffield Children's Hospital. It was a hugely enjoyable day for the students and those fortunate to sample the tasty snacks on offer.
The students also organised a non-uniform day which also contributed to the final amount raised. It was "hard work but a great laugh" according to one student.
The idea behind the event was to encourage the students to put into practice the skills they have learnt whilst participating on the BTEC First Diploma in Retail, delivered by The Source. The cake sale allowed the students to use their new found retail skills of planning, selling and customer service in a way that not only benefitted them, but also the Children's Hospital.
Helen Lee, the tutor for the BTEC diploma, said: "The students worked exceptionally well as team, giving each other the respect they would expect in a retail situation. I am very pleased at how they carried out the event, putting their learning into practice and representing both their school and the Schools Programme remarkably well".
A representative from Wickersley School, Michelle Marshall, thought the students showed a good understanding of working in retail and it was clear to see that they had a great time working together and using their skills in a practical environment.
The Schools Programme are considering doing more of these events to help students gain a more practical insight into retail, interact with customers and see how to put their skills to the test due to the days roaring success.
