A Week in the Life of The Source Marketing department
Day 1, Monday 20th July
I expect this week to give me a better understanding and insight into the processes and activities involved with and around marketing, involving a fair amount of preparation and communication with various members of the building. I imagine that I will learn how to best approach numerous marketing situations and briefs whilst here, which will be very advantageous in improving my understanding of the business.
I hope to learn valuable advice and information to help me in later marketing situations such as effective preparation, how to present oneself and how to work to deadlines, budgets and briefs.
Day 2, Tuesday 21st July
Yesterday was not as I expected it to be at all. After being in the office for only an hour, I found that the office is far more lively than I first thought it would be, never being a dull moment at all with Mike Denby and George Elliott's outburst of operatic tunes.
Mike set me to work by showing me my ‘To do' list for the week, which seemed quite interesting and would put my skills to the test. One of my tasks would be to create case studies of learners participating in various training courses.
By 11:30, I had a full week planned of meetings and interviews which definitely made the job look far more hectic. I then accompanied George, Mike and David Webber, the new visual merchandising manager, on an outing to the Sheffield Showcase project. My job was to take notes on each window so that I could then later write up an evaluative critique on each contribution.
After lunch, I compiled my questions for my first editorial interview with retail tutor Helen Lee. You can see my completed story entitled ‘A Tasty Recipe for Success' on The Source website.
Day 3, Wednesday 22nd July
Tuesday was a busy day. In the morning I carried out an interview with the two students on the BTEC First Diploma in Retail course. The story was to tell readers about their achievements whilst studying at The Source.
In the afternoon I visited Zara with one of the retail tutors. The aim of my visit was to interview a leaner who had almost completed her level 3 in Retail Management. Since starting the programme the learner had gained a promotion twice. The story focused on her progression since joining the programme.
After lunch, Mike and I went to interview the store manager of a charity store in Rotherham called Annie's Place. She and the store had used a number of training schemes to boost their understanding of the retail sector. The article will be shown shown in the Rotherham Advertiser, which I was so excited to hear, I never thought I would have my work published.
Mike also thought it would be a good idea to promote The Source on Hallam FM. So he asked me to call and explain that I'm on work placement at The Source and I'd like a chance of winning a competition. We didn't win, but I still had my moment of fame.
Day 4, Thursday 23rd July
Yet another great day on the job. I accompanied the Recruitment Team, Jayne Ridge and Sarah Borrill, to two meetings to gain an insight on their role within The Source and how they have helped the stores within Meadowhall. One was at Bhs and the other at Millie's Cookies who had used the team to fill positions within their stores. I wrote up the two case studies on the two young girls working within the stores, who seemed to enjoy their new positions quite a lot. I then helped the Gym Manager, Andy Ward, with various marketing activities such as a "Meet the Team" notice board within the Gym, a draft of a future members evening and a write up of all the recent classes and activities they have introduced this month to go in the newsletter.
Day 5, Friday 24th July
Thursday was a very quiet day; however I did go along with Mike to Republic to interview their Assistant Manager. I found the interview quite insightful, very interesting to hear exactly how stores in Meadowhall are improving with The Source's help. This piece may also being going in the paper too, not many people would have got two pieces of work published in a week.
Today, my last day, I had to accompany another assessor to a student at Magna who had worked his way through the ranks in their kitchens. My final job was to have my picture taken for this piece, which I wasn't too happy about having done! Mike put pieces of my work on the website which all looks really good.
Overall
I have had such a good time this week, it's been far more interesting than I ever expected. The team have been amazing to work with and always had lots of different tasks for me to do, keeping me busy nearly every day. I feel more confident at approaching people, asking them questions and writing my own work and seeing it displayed has allowed me to see my strengths and weaknesses. I know that my experience at The Source will help me greatly in years to come and hopefully help me get my dream job in Events and Marketing, but I am definitely going to miss working within the department.
20th August 2009
Student Kim Ward spent a week working in The Source Marketing department in July, gaining first-hand experience of a marketing function. This month, Kim tells us all about her experience and getting to grips with the team's singing habits!Day 1, Monday 20th July
