Meet the Team - David Webber
Meet the Team - David Webber
18th September 2009

Meet David Webber, the new Visual Merchandising Manager for the Sheffield Showcase project initiated by The Source. Here, our roving reporter quiz's David on his new role and discovers more about his exciting new project.

So David, tell us about your new role...
My role is to teach the Visual Merchandising Apprentices training standards and introduce them to the exciting world of retail and merchandising. A large proportion of my role involves meeting with clients and taking exhibition bookings for the Showcase windows. I also work with the designers and artists to create ‘film set' window displays, which is an area I am really passionate about.

What is the Sheffield Showcase project all about?
The project is all about regenerating the neglected shop fronts in Sheffield City Centre. Unfortunately many of the stores were run down and ceased trading. This is where The Source stepped in. Working alongside Sheffield City Council, we are improving the look and feel of the area by showcasing talented artists and designers to fill the empty shop windows with beautiful products in an intriguing and exciting display.

What expert knowledge have you passed onto the Sheffield Showcase Apprentices?
I have a diverse background in visual merchandising, from House of Fraser, Frasers in Glasgow and Army and Navy London to Harrods. I am passing on my knowledge from the retail sector and encouraging them to get creative with merchandise. Because I have worked in retail for many years, it is great for me to pass on the knowledge and skills that I have gained to help mould these young people.

What do you like most about your new role?
I really like meeting new people every day and especially talking to the designers and artists to discover what inspires their work and how they want this to be portrayed in their window.  Working with young people is also completely refreshing. They are so enthusiastic to learn and you can see them growing in confidence every day; it is a real pleasure to work with them.

And the million dollar question for September...what is your greatest achievement?
I would have to say my greatest achievement has been winning several window competitions in previous roles. I have won some amazing prizes, including a trip on the Orient Express which really was an experience to remember. I am really proud that my creativity allowed me to win these experiences.
