Meet the Team - Jamie Oakes, Visual Merchandising Apprentice at The Source
Jamie, tell us a little more about your role at The Source.....
I am a Visual Merchandising Apprentice learning to do visual merchandising to a good standard and helping create ‘film set' window displays to brighten up Sheffield City Centre.
What do your day to day duties include?
I work with designers and David Webber, the Visual Merchandising Manager, to help design window display layouts and then I put them together with the other visual merchandising apprentices. I also go to Debenhams and Burtons to get practical work experience of window dressing in a large department store.
What are you enjoying most about your role so far?
I am really enjoying learning visual merchandising and working with designers to create window displays. It's also great working within a team of people of all ages and sharing ideas.
What has been your most unusual window to dress?
The most unusual window I am dressing at the moment is a robot window using electrics and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
How has your Apprenticeship helped you develop your skills and confidence?
My apprenticeship has developed my skills because I am working with an experienced display manager who teaches me new skills. David gives me hints and tips from his experience in the industry which helps me use my creativity to design exciting window displays.
Where would you like to be and what would you like to be doing in five years time?
I really enjoy merchandising and I hope I can become experienced enough to become a Visual Manager in a large retail store.
And the million dollar question for February, what did you have on your pancakes this year?
Sugar - although really I'm sweet enough!
