Chelsea Leigh is a Business Administration Apprentice at Hush Beauty in Sheffield. The Source supported Chelsea into her Apprenticeship and is now delivering her Business Administration qualification in the workplace. This month, Chelsea gives us an insight into her first week as an Apprentice and tells us what she has been up to.
Day 1, Tuesday 13th April
I expect the first day to be a quiet one, giving me an insight into the workings of Hush. Meeting the team, and greeting customers. After an hour spent in the shop, I realised it would be a far more interesting than I first thought. Living with the team's creative outbursts would soon become part of working life.
Then came the afternoon, brochure producing was a real struggle, with the printers ink squirting all over the shop floor...then came the cleaning. In between greeting customers, making phone calls and introducing Hush to several business listings, the ink was cleared and the brochures were produced.
Day 2, Wednesday 14th April
I returned to work with a smile on my face, waiting for the day's events to take place. Taking appointments and inputting additional information to the computer system took up the majority of the morning. By the afternoon I had met Hush's beauty trainer who was making a visit to train the beauty therapist on facials and product information. Out of the blue I was offered a facial; I jumped at the chance and was laid on the bed before the therapists had even finished their dinner.
I was to experience a redness therapy facial which was to soothe and neutralise rosaceous- redness and sensitive skin. The feeling was absolutely incredible, leaving my skin feeling fresh and calm. Then I was to learn about each and every Murad product that Hush now sells, helping to cater for all the different skin types.
Day 3, Thursday 15th April
Morning: Sitting at the reception adding information to the new system, I felt I could be of more use creating offers and posters to help advertise the business. So I got to work on a prom offer promotion which I thought would work well as there are a few local schools that are soon going to be in prom season. Girls wanting to look elegant and glamorous would want hair, nails and a stunning tan to look great for their perfect night. Taking advantage of the situation, I created a poster and prepared to visit local schools next week to promote the offer, to bring new customers to Hush.
Surprise meeting with Mike Denby form The Source. A working lunch, my first of the week, gave me an insight into preparations and activities used in marketing. Mike gave me valuable advice that I could use in different marketing situations, helping me to consider things such as budgets and time deadline.
Day 4, Friday 16th April
My morning was spent searching for business listings, and updating social networking sites, with offers and promotions that Hush currently has on, including the April offer; the March offer was such a hit that we still have customers in the salon nearing the end of April enquiring if they could still experience the March offer.
The afternoon was really exciting, when having not one but two Hen parties to cater for, offering facials, massages, and a variety of other blissful services. Making sure the atmosphere was good and the food was great, I spent my time split between the company laptop and the Hen parties.
Day 5, Saturday 17th April
After a busy week at Hush, meetings and several phone calls with Mike Denby and many more eventful happenings, I was expecting a rather quiet day with the odd customer and updating Hush's Facebook page. Boy was a wrong, looking in the appointment book I see the team and I have a busy day. I soon picked up that Saturdays are the busiest time of the week for Hush Hair and Beauty. Having haircuts and colours, last minute waxing and a princess party in the late afternoon. Having nine 5-8 year olds demanding hair make-up and nails was not what I would call a quiet day!
Overall
My first two weeks at Hush have been full of eventful activities. I am now looking forward to spending my time here, to help make a difference to the business and complete my Business and Admin N.V.Q Level 2.
