Sheffield Theatres seeking a new Chair for its Board of Trustees
Sheffield Theatres seeking a new Chair for its Board of Trustees
1st September 2010

Sheffield Theatres is currently seeking a new Chair for its Board of Trustees. Following the departure of Dominic Shellard, who has recently left his post at Sheffield University to take up the role of Vice Chancellor at Leicester's De Montfort University, the Theatres are advertising for someone to lead and work with the Board and Senior Management Team to shape the future of the organisation.

Sheffield Theatres, which comprises the iconic Crucible, the Studio and the Victorian splendour of the Lyceum Theatre, presents and produces a diverse programme of work on its stages. Last year over 300,000 people attended Sheffield Theatres and its Creative Development team offered over 12,000 young people and adults opportunities to participate in the arts. The refurbishment of the Crucible and the inaugural season won plaudits from critics and audiences alike, and there is currently a huge amount of excitement surrounding the Crucible's latest home-grown production of Hamlet, starring John Simm and John Nettles.

The role of Chair requires an individual who will act as leader and a spokesperson for the organisation, as well as someone who understands and is passionate about the work of Sheffield Theatres. The Theatres are currently preparing for news of their funding for the next 12 months. The Arts Council has asked all funded organisations to prepare for a cut of up to 10% and Sheffield Theatres' management and Board have been closely examining how they can manage with reduced financial support. The Theatres generate 72% of their own revenue, however, although funding only represents 28% of the total income, this money makes a significant difference to the quality and diversity of the work company can offer on its stages and in the community. The Chair will have strong commercial acumen to help the Board and the management team navigate the current economic challenges, as well as demonstrating excellent communication skills and an understanding of local, regional and cultural agendas.

Alongside the Chair, Sheffield Theatres is also looking for additional Trustees with experience from universities and other parts of the education sector, theatre industry, financial, organisational development and / or communications businesses.

The posts have been advertised in the media and on the Sheffield Theatres website. Applications will close at the end of September and it is hoped that the new Chair will be in post by the beginning of December.
