The National Citizen Service is on the hunt for 16 year olds to help your local community. The programme launches in July 2011 and is a free summer camp which will run for two months. What are you up to this summer? Why not try activities you won't have done before? Work in a group on a project of your own design to help your local community.
The scheme, set up by the Conservative government leader David Cameron, is designed to build a bigger and stronger society any encourage 16 year olds from any background to take on new challenges and make a difference in their local community.
The first two weeks of the camp will be away from home and the young people will be involved in tough physical activities aimed to boast their confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. After these two weeks, children will return home and will participate in a five week programme around their area, where they can work on changing and improving their local community.
There are three main parts to the National Citizen Service:
Group Bonding
Get to know the other young people in your group during the induction week and a five day outdoor adventure residential.
Face the Challenge
Learn valuable skills during a five day local community residential and open your eyes to the problems in your community. Then use what you have learned to plan your community project during the following week.
Take Action
Time to get started with your community project and enjoy watching the difference you are making.
Charmaine from The Princes Trust said: "It's a life changing experience that you can't explain and it's a great feeling to know that you've made a difference."
At the end of the two month programme the 16 year olds who have completed the course will celebrate their achievements with families and friends at the National Citizen Service graduation ceremony. The children will also have played a big part in the planning and organising of their ceremony.
David Cameron along with the conservative party has created this programme and is strongly backing the service. David Cameron has said: "We must give young people more to aspire to. More shape to their lives. More responsibility. More pride in themselves and what they can do. And we must all come together to do more about the national scandal of all this wasted promise. We owe it to the next generations."
