The Source Skills Academy has been giving young people a great opportunity to learn new skills and get involved in the community this summer with the National Citizen Service (NCS).

Through youth charity The Prince's Trust and The Source Skills Academy, NCS encourages Year 11 students to do something different during their summer holiday. Individuals are learning new skills, meeting new people and making a real difference to their community.

The scheme runs for three weeks full-time, including two weeks residential in Derbyshire where the students completed outdoor activities including canoeing and abseiling. Students also get the opportunity to design and deliver their own project in the local community and they  have arranged a community project with Bupa which includes gardening, painting and helping the elderly community.

Brenda England, Schools & Communities Manager said: "The National Citizen Service is a great scheme that engages young people in their local community. We have taken part in lots of exciting activities testing team building skills and demonstrating community spirit and the scheme is proving successful already, with great feedback from the students."
