A cut above the rest!
The Skills For Jobs programme, which finished at the end of June, has helped almost 4000 people achieve a qualification in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster over the last two years. The programme was devised by the Skills Funding Agency and part funded by the European Social Fund to equip unemployed people with the skills they need to gain sustainable employment.
Ben Rose, 39, of Sheffield city centre, picked up the Adult Learner over 25-award .He overcame a number of personal barriers and disabilities to complete a business administration qualification with The Source. He has continued his learning and is volunteering in the local community.
Ben said, "Since participating in the Skills for Jobs programme, I really have made big changes in my life. I have been volunteering helping 16-25 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds, which has been great as it allows me to give something back to the community. I came from a disadvantaged background and have encountered social exclusion and overcome many barriers and personal difficulties throughout my own life and have come out the other side. I was extremely proud to receive this award as it demonstrated that although I have suffered personal difficulties, it's never too late to build upon something and make positive changes to your life."
Anna Harman, Ben's Tutor at The Source said, "Ben is a great role model to those who may have experienced barriers to entering employment and training. He is a proven case that people can actually turn their lives around and achieve their desired goals. Ben worked extremely hard to gain qualifications in Business Administration whilst attending The Source that will help him on the way to securing a job within this sector. We are extremely proud of Ben's achievements and wish him every success in the future."
Sandra Morrow, Working Links' Sheffield operations manager, said: "The programme has been a great success. We've helped almost 4,000 people achieve a qualification with many of those having gained employment on the back of their achievement. Training, whether it's to top up existing skills or retrain for employment in a new sector, is important, not only for personal development but to help Great Britain recover from the recession."
